13-05-2022

We’ve all been there: the clock strikes 3 and suddenly we’re so tired it could be bedtime! Most of us don’t have the luxury of taking a nap so it’s coffee and a pastry. Whatever can get us through the day, right? What if I told you that there is a healthy alternative to your afternoon pick-me-up—something that will not only help you get through the day, but get through it with real energy, sans blood sugar crash later. Sounds too good to be true right? Well, it’s not, and in this article, I’m sharing healthy snacks to boost energy and nourish your body.

Unhealthy Snacks & Drinks to Ditch

Bad news first. There are common drinks and snacks that the majority of people reach for that are zapping energy, draining the adrenals, and throwing blood sugar levels out of whack. While these sneaky go-tos may give you that initial burst of energy and feel-good hormones, it won’t be long until they’ll leave you even more tired than before. Here are the snacks and drinks to avoid when confronted with the dreaded afternoon slump:

Soft Drinks

Sodas contain artificial sugar and caffeine, two things which should be avoided for healthy energy levels. Artificial sweeteners themselves are becoming a huge concern due to their potential side effects and health hazards. I know that soft drinks taste good (I was once addicted to Sprite!) but I encourage you to not get lured into drinking them to get you over your afternoon slump. If the bubbles are something you crave, try carbonated water with citrus or berries.

Coffee and Caffeine

Coffee and caffeine are already major stressors to the adrenals and energy levels. These should especially be avoided during the afternoon as caffeine can disrupt sleep.

One study found that caffeine consumption didn’t make up for lack of sleep and can worsen overall brain performance! In fact, caffeine doesn’t actually make you feel  more awake and energized. It only blocks the receptors in the body that tell your brain it’s tired! That’s a trick we do not want to be playing on our bodies.

Avoid coffee and caffeine from energy drinks, green tea, black tea, and yerba mate, during the afternoon slump.

Sugary foods

Processed sugars or even too much natural sugar (think fruit juices) can cause blood sugar spikes. When you eat something high in sugar, you may notice that you feel immediately great until that inevitable crash and burn less than an hour later! You may also notice that you feel more frazzled, anxious, and stressed after consuming lots of sugar. If you are reaching for sugar to help get you through the work day or an important project, foods high in sugar should be avoided at all costs.

Refined Carbs

Refined carbohydrates, also known as simple or bad, include refined grains adn sugars that have been stripped of all fiber, brain, and nutrients. Think white bread, pasta, pastries, white flour, breakfast cereals and sweet desserts. Oftentimes, when the afternoon slump comes around we crave refined carbs. The problem is, refined carbs create inflammation in the body and are a source of empty calories! We want nourishment.

Fast Food & Deep Fried Food

Sometimes fast food seems like the only practical solution for an afternoon time crunch. But fast food and deep fried foods contain rancid oils and bad PUFAs that lead to inflammation and wreak havoc on adrenal function. Avoiding fast food may require food prep, but as you’ll realize, your body and energy levels will thank you!

What to Focus on When Choosing a Healthy Alternative

Blood Sugar Balance

It’s true, skipping meals can create blood sugar swings, but so can compulsive eating and eating poor food choices (ehem, everything mentioned above!). When choosing a healthy snack alternative or healthy drink alternative, it’s important to prioritize blood sugar balance and optimal hydration.

#1 – A balanced “meal” doesn’t really have to look like a meal. It can also be a snack that contains healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and protein.

#2 – Staying hydrated helps to give you an immediate energy boost and curb cravings of processed foods that spike blood sugar.

Let’s dive into the best foods to support these two key guidelines.

Healthy Drink & Healthy Snack Alternatives for Your Afternoon Slump

healthy snacks, coffee, energy drink, green tea, caffeine, energy, black tea, yerba mate, energy drinks, snack, soft drink, nut butter, blood sugar levels, apple cider vinegar, sugar, energy boost, blood sugar, dark chocolate, milk, healthy alternative, almond milk, matcha, peanut butter, healthy fat, added sugar, coconut water, b vitamin, greek yogurt, hot water, healthy snacks, healthy eating, potato chips, coffee alternative, complex carbs, caffeine alternative, dried fruit, health benefits, golden milk, fatty fish, chia seeds, fiber, afternoon, fresh fruit, unhealthy snacks, blood pressure, peppermint tea

Drinks

Coffee Alternative

We wrote a whole article on the best coffee alternatives, but I want to share some of my favorites here. For the woman who loves a warm latte, I invite you to try a golden milk! A golden milk is a delicious combination of turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, honey, and alternative milk. Turmeric is the perfect anti-inflammatory herb to help reduce bodily stress. Ginger (optional) can help stimulate digestion, and we know that a sluggish digestive system means sluggish energy.

For the woman who loves an iced coffee, try making homemade almond milk and adding 2-4 teaspoons or so of cacao powder and a bit of honey. Pour that over ice and you have the yummiest cacao milk ever. While cacao does have a bit of caffeine (4mg compared to coffees 95mg) it is not enough to be concerned about.

Caffeinated Tea Alternative

For my tea drinking ladies, peppermint has a natural energizing aroma and impact on the mind and body. Enjoy peppermint tea hot or cold when the afternoon comes around.

Energy Drinks Alternative

And for the woman who loves a fruity refresher, our Hydration Superfood Energy is your new BFF. This formula is packed with energizing B vitamins, hydrating superfoods, and potent antioxidants and vitamins for cellular rejuvenation, detoxification, and of course—energy. It’s an addictive strawberry-kiwi flavor perfect for warmer weather.

Snacks

Dried Fruit and Nuts

A classic trail mix is a great snack for energy and blood sugar balance. You can either make your  own or find one without any added sugar or oil. Raw nuts (almonds, cashews, brazil nuts), seeds (pumpkin, sunflower) paired with dried fruits like cranberries and apricots is the perfect combo of healthy fats and fiber. You can even get fancy and add some shredded coconut for an extra boost of healthy fats and yumminess.

Chia Pudding

Chia seeds are high in fiber, protein, and healthy fat. To make this snack, take two tablespoons of chia seeds and mix them into half of a cup of dairy milk. Option to add stevia, honey, or maple syrup. Top with berries, if you feel so inclined.

Refreshing Smoothie

Smoothies aren’t just for breakfast. You can enjoy them any time of the day. They are the perfect way to fill the body with healthy fats and nutrients, without having to make a full meal. This is my favorite go-to recipe:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice)
  • 1 heaping cup of frozen berries
  • ¼ to ½ avocado flesh for healthy fat
  • 1 tablespoon of Beauty Complex
  • 1 scoop of nut butter, optional
  • 2 tsp. Of chia seed, optional

INSTRUCTIONS

Add the first 5 ingredients to a power blender and blend until smooth.

Hummus Plate

You can either prep your own hummus at the beginning of the week or buy a hummus without any unhealthy oils. Look for a hummus made with extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil. Then, pair your hummus with GF crackers, sliced turkey or leftover fatty fish, carrots, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, and olives.

Hard Boiled Eggs

Meal prep hard boiled eggs at the beginning of the week to stay prepared for when you get hungry in the mid-afternoon. You can pair your hard boiled eggs with turkey or mash them up into an egg salad with healthy mayo.

Cucumber, Tomato, and Avocado Salad

This simple salad is a classic way to stay hydrated and happy. Sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, avocado, red onion, a crushed garlic clove, olive oil, and a splash of vinegar is all you need to make this light and refreshing snack. I love to add apple cider vinegar to this, as ACV  helps balance blood sugar, maintain even energy, and prevent fatigue. Because of it’s high potassium levels, it is wonderful at inviting in fresh, natural energy!

Avocado and lemon

Avocado with a squeeze of lemon, a  sprinkle of salt, and a spoon is one of the best snacks for fuel and focus!

If you want to get a little fancier with an avocado, turn it into guacamole! Don’t skimp on the cilantro—this herb is incredible at flushing out toxins and heavy metals. Pair your guac with carrots, celery, cucumbers, and GF crackers for a refreshing and hydrating afternoon pick me up.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are one of the best nourishing complex carbs. Roast a couple of sweet potatoes during your meal prep and make this snack in a cinch. Top with nut butter, coconut oil, or yogurt for a filling snack.

Other Afternoon Pick Me Ups

If we move away from food and drinks for a minute, we can look at the other ways to boost energy during that midday slump:

  • Take a walk outside
  • Lie down with legs up the wall
  • Jump on a mini trampoline
  • Inhale energizing essential oils
  • Take a cold shower
  • Sit in the sun for 15 minutes

I hope this article has inspired you to try out a new afternoon pick me up! Let me know in the comments below which you are going to try this week!

Alternatives To Coffee

Golden Milk

Golden Milk

Golden milk is a great alternative to coffee with lots of health benefits. It is very easy to make and you can totally invent your own version, depending on your taste buds. So, what makes the milk golden? The answer is Turmeric.

Turmeric is a spice that originated in India. This is by far the healthiest spices of them all. It has anti-inflammatory properties due to the chemical called curcumin.

How To Make Golden Milk?

This awesome drink is pretty easy to make and it doesn’t take much of your time in the morning. All you need to make this beverage is milk(it can be coconut milk, almond milk, rice milk, or plain, regular milk),

a teaspoon of turmeric powder, ground cinnamon, a teaspoon of sugar if you prefer your beverage to be sweet, a little bit of nutmeg, and coconut oil(optional).

Now, I’ll let you in on a little secret ingredient that I always make sure to put in the mix with Turmeric. The secret ingredient is black pepper. Yes, you read that right, it’s black pepper, preferably the Ceylon type.

Pepper and Turmeric are a powerful couple because pepper helps turmeric release the chemical called curcumin. Not to mention that both of them have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, so you do the math here.

Preparation

  • Put one cup of milk(coconut milk, or almond milk)in a pot and bring it to a boil, or just warm it up if you don’t want it piping hot. Stir the milk so it doesn’t burn.
  • After the milk starts to warm up a little bit, take your chosen ingredients and add them to the warm milk. Stir them all together and let the milk warm up even more.
  • Put the milk in a coffee mug and enjoy your beverage.

See? It’s so easy to make and yet, so healthy.

Matcha Tea

Matcha Tea

Matcha is a type of powdered green tea made from the Camellia Sinesis plant. You probably have heard of it except if you don’t live under a rock. Matcha seems to be everywhere, especially these few years.

Although is technically a caffeine drink, Matcha is actually full of nutrients and high in antioxidants. It also helps your brain perform its best during stressful tasks, and it’s great for cleansing your body from toxins.

I mean, what more can you look for in a drink?

Green Tea

Green Tea

For all of you coffee lovers out there, here is something that might satisfy your caffeine cravings. Technically, green tea contains caffeine and can wake your brain up in a jiffy.

Green tea is just a simple mix of hot water a baggie of tea. You can always add some sweetener like honey or sugar to make it tastier. Just like Matcha tea, green tea also has anti-inflammatory properties and can help fight cancer.

Hot Water With Lemon

This beverage is great to drink in the morning, especially if you want to lose some extra weight and start your morning with a healthy dose of vitamin C.

Simply just warm up some water, put it in a coffee mug, and squeeze out some lemon in it. I admit, it can hardly wake you up like your morning cup of joe, but it is a very healthy habit to do.

Fresh, Pressed Juice

Fresh Pressed Juice

Nothing freshens me up during summertime like a cold, fresh-pressed juice. I prefer it so much more than store-bought, sugar-filled, juices. You can make juice out of almost any fruit you’d like, and you can mix multiple fruits and make a nice non-alcoholic fruit cocktail.

I personally love my morning OJ and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I do it pretty simple with just a little bit of a twist. I add some freshly grated ginger for some extra antioxidants, so, for all of you smokers out there, this is the drink for you.

It can seriously clear up your lungs and get rid of all the toxins, also it is amazing for your heart health.

Smoothie

Smoothie

A smoothie is an excellent way to start your day. It can double as a liquid breakfast, not just a healthy drink. As always, you can add whatever you want to your smoothie, fruits, vegetables, some protein like peanut butter, flaxseed, and of course, some cold water to make it more liquid.

Turmeric Tea

Turmeric Tea

As a loyal coffee drinker, I rarely want to substitute my coffee with anything else, so I drink this beverage at night. Turmeric tea is very healthy and it really is just hot water with turmeric powder in it.

You can even put a random tea bag and mix in 1/4 of a teaspoon of turmeric powder in it. Of course, don’t forget to release the curcumin chemical with the help of some black pepper.

Hot Chocolate

Is there anything better than chocolate? Yes, a liquid and warm form of chocolate on a cold, winter day. Even though some people speculate that eating/drinking chocolate is bad for your health, actually it’s not that bad for you.

Chocolate can reduce inflammation, protect your skin from the sun, and of course, make you happy and in a better mood. Of course, there are some negative effects if consumed in extreme doses but that is actually from the sugar part of the chocolate, so try not to have it in large doses.

Energy Drinks

Energy Drinks

While not the healthiest of choices, energy drinks can definitely keep you awake and alert for your tasks. These types of drinks contain large doses of caffeine that keep your body from falling asleep.

Honestly, I am a very anti-energy drink person so, just drink some coffee or green tea if you really crave some caffeine.

Chocolate Milk

If you want healthy bones and a sweet taste, chocolate milk is here to help. No, it is not the same thing as hot chocolate, you can drink this beverage cold if you want to.

Simply just pour a glass of milk, and add some powdered chocolate to it. Stir well so it doesn’t have any clumps and enjoy your chocolate goodness.

Lemon Juice

Lemon Juice

When life gives you lemons, you gotta make lemonade, right? Squeeze some lemons and add some water to it. If you can’t handle the strong acidic taste, you can totally add some honey or sugar to it.

Barley Coffee

Barley coffee is exactly what you would imagine it would be, a coffee made from the ancient cereal named Barley. Don’t worry, Barley coffee is totally caffeine-free so it won’t have the negative side-effects that coffee can sometimes have.

Raw Cacao

Raw Cacao

Cacao really knows how to resemble and imitate coffee in aesthetics. Cacao powder is made from the solids of the cacao bean which is then ground into a powder.

Don’t be fooled, even though the cacao bean is what chocolate is made of, it can actually be quite bitter if you don’t put some sugar in it. Cacao is a great coffee substitute with just a little bit of caffeine in it to wake you up.

Chicory Coffee

This type of coffee is made out of the Chicory root and it substitutes coffee almost exclusively. The Chicory root is roasted, ground, and then brewed to make a coffee alternative.

The Chicory root resembles the taste of coffee and is an excellent ”fake coffee”. You can also find a blend of Chicory and coffee in the market, so if you don’t want a caffeinated drink, please look closely at the labels and make sure it’s Chicory coffee only.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar increases your potassium intake, promotes a healthy PH balance in your system, and can help you lose weight. It’s also used during a detox process to get rid of most of the negative toxins in your body.

Take a glass of water and add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and some honey. Drink this on an empty stomach in the morning.

Chai Tea

Chai Tea

Chai tea is made from a mixture of black tea and different types of herbs and spices. A word of caution, black tea does contain a high dose of caffeine in it so if you try to avoid drinking caffeine then this beverage is not for you.

Kombucha

Kombucha is technically a tea made from fermented mushrooms. It has many health benefits and it is regularly used in detox programs and diets.

Coconut Water

Coconut water is the water that is extracted from the interior from the coconuts. It contains electrolytes and natural sugars which are very healthy for you.

These seven healthy alternatives to sugar in coffee will help you stay on track with your coffee fix daily without risking your health.

Healthy alternatives to sugar in coffee
Overloading your coffee with sugar does more harm than good

Sugar in coffee is our traditional method. However, overloading your coffee with sugar does more harm than good. The high amount of fructose is linked to many diseases, including obesity and diabetes.

I’m not here to tell you to cut sugar immediately. I’ll walk you in on seven healthy alternatives to sugar in coffee, so you don't have to sacrifice this simple happiness for something “off” on the tongue.

1. Honey

Healthy alternatives to sugar in coffee: Honey
One teaspoon of organic honey for an average cup of coffee

The first time I heard of honey in coffee, I had my doubts. But after the first two sips, I decided to ask my mom for another cup.

The best honey you want to go for must be organic. Some “fake” honey has lots of sugar. Honey has a rich, concentrated texture, and that’s why you don’t have to worry about it ruining the consistency and quality of your coffee.

I suggest one teaspoon of organic honey for an average cup of coffee. Don’t overdo it; otherwise, it’s going to out-mask the flavor of your coffee and ruin the drink. You might also be interested in our guide on the best sweetener for coffee.

2. Stevia

You can buy stevia in a small bottle and add a few drops into your coffee. Alternatively, you can get them in bags and give half a tablespoon of stevia into your cup of Joe before stirring. Organic stevia is a zero-calorie sweetener, alcohol-free, gluten-free, and non-GMO.

The cardiotonic properties in stevia help stabilize blood pressure and control weight gain. However, overconsumption of stevia products that contain sugar alcohol may cause nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

Only use a limited amount of stevia in your coffee; stevia is 200 times sweeter than table sugar, so you’ve been warned.

3. Coconut Sugar Or Coconut Liquid Flower Nectar

Plant-based and naturally sweet, coconut sugar is another stellar substitute for refined sugar in coffee. Many brands sell dried and crystallized coconut palm in the market that you can buy in bags. Other than that, you can also get liquid flower nectar extracted by boiling coconut sap and water.

The latter product is a tad more expensive and harder to find. Both are nutrient-rich with a smooth, creamy texture.

The only downside to coconut sweetener is the number of calories; there are about 18 calories in one teaspoon of coconut sugar with five grams of carbs. Coconut sugar is a healthy product that aids digestion, normalizes blood sugar, and regulates heartbeat.

4. Cinnamon Ground

Healthy alternatives to sugar in coffee: Cinnamon Ground
Cinnamon reduces the feeling of hunger throughout the day and is rich in antioxidants

I know cinnamon is not downright an equivalent to the sugar in coffee. But if you know how to make it right, your coffee will taste a lot sweeter with an elegant aroma without adding any sugar.

I like to add a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon ground on the coffee surface before brewing. This brewing method will blend a sweet and woody flavor of cinnamon into the bitterness of coffee and leave a subtle citrusy note and a spicy kick in the aftertaste.

One of the most outstanding health benefits of cinnamon is that it helps regulate the insulin level. Plus, cinnamon reduces the feeling of hunger throughout the day and is rich in antioxidants.

5. Organic Cacao Powder

Note that many cacao powder products out there are not organic. They add an insane amount of artificial sweetener into the powder to enhance its initial sweetness, which keeps you buying more. But at the end of the day, those redundant and unhealthy additives only make things worse.

Organic cacao powder is recognized for its smooth, sweet taste and cozy bitterness. I like to use one tablespoon of cacao powder and mix it with freshly ground coffee before the brew. Add a dash of plant-based milk into the drink and enjoy it to make it even creamier.

6. Nutmeg Powder

Sounds odd? I know. But if you haven’t tried it with coffee before, do it now.

This mild, tasty pick-me-up lends a hint of earthiness and a slightly sweet smell to your morning coffee fix. The way nutmeg powder enhances the coffee flavor is not exactly similar to how sugar does with its sweetness. Nutmeg powder gives you a spicy-sweet tang.

Nutmeg is rich in vitamin compounds and anti-inflammatory properties to relieve pain, treat digestive disorders, and regulate blood pressure.

The preparation of nutmeg coffee is fast and straightforward. Add a quarter teaspoon of nutmeg powder into your ready-brewed coffee, stir the mixture consistently to ensure no clumps are left behind, add a dash of your favorite milk, and enjoy.

7. Vanilla Extract

Healthy alternatives to sugar in coffee: Vanilla Extract
You need to add two drops of vanilla extract into your black coffee, stir it up, and you’re ready to go

If you’re a home baker like me, there’s no reason to leave your beloved vanilla extract to waste. Not many people think of vanilla extract as the best alternative to sugar in coffee. It doesn’t only add an extra amount of sweetness to my cup of Joe but also enhances the overall tasting profile and aroma with a rich, mouthful, and full-bodied texture.

You need to add two drops of vanilla extract into your black coffee, stir it up, and you’re ready to go. Please don’t exceed this amount; otherwise, the drink ends up with an annoying bitterness.

On a recent trip to Oceanside, we popped into a stylish place called Communal and I made a mental note to revisit this stretch of cool I later discovered called the “Tremont Collective.”

Communal is the multifaceted space that anchors the Tremont Collective, which is actually a community of like-minded businesses, offering a private patio,  flower shop, full café experience, and a retail and event space called  “The Annex.”

Communal is a sexy mix of coffee shop, wine bar, restaurant, workspace and flower shop, with an eclectic mix of patrons that gives Oceanside its charm.

It features a mural created by North Park artist, Chelsea Smith, seating indoors and outdoors in a comfortably designed space.

With two large skylights, the Oceanside space mirrors the natural tones and coastal palette of Communal’s other locations in North Park and South Park, with elevated elements like the winding wine bar and a lounge with leather couches and chairs and of course, a communal table.

The menu was created by Chef Jeannette Silva and features a full line of breakfast sandwiches including Smoked Salmon Bagel, Maple Sausage Sandwich and Turkey Pesto Sandwich, along with bowls that are served all day.

The toast bar also served all day includes a few of my favorites including Croque Madame and Herbed Cucumber Avocado.

Pizzettas and salads are served from 12 p.m. – 7 p.m. and include a nice mix of delicious Pizzettas, which are basically small pizzas, and some very healthy yet satisfying salads. Healthy is good but it was nice to see a Pastrami Melt, Bahn Mi and Rosemary Three-Cheese Melt should your hunger need a bit more to quell it.

Desserts include some fun options including Chocolate Chia Pudding, Crème Brule Toast and Banoffee which is a banana, cream sweet butter tart with an espresso whip.

While the “cocktails” are actually wine-based, they do have some creative options including the Ginger Pear Cocktail, Sparkling Sangria, or simply a glass of wine to be enjoyed from the seaside-inspired wine bar. It’s a perfect location to unwind after a day of work and the residential setting on Tremont, a block west of Coast Highway 101 provides the perfect atmosphere.

I’m also a big fan of fresh flowers so the flower shop element really appealed to me. I could see utilizing this space for a light bite to eat, catch up on some work, and leave with a fresh arrangement of flowers that have a bit more personality than your local grocery store.

The Communal Annex is a separate space attached to a larger event room where they will hold classes in calligraphy, macrame, flower arranging classes, and more. That room is also available to rent for events such as baby or bridal showers, company parties or whatever the occasion may be.

The Annex is also home to a larger selection of Communal retail products, including everything from gift cards to baby items and home accessories.

Communal and the surrounding stores in the Tremont Collective are a perfect example of how to tastefully incorporate commerce into a neighborhood, blending in with the community and providing products and services that enhance, rather than detract from the area.

It’s as though Communal has been a part of the community for years, so kudos to the team behind this multi-use gem.

From the design to the vibe to the menu and the welcoming attitude of the staff, they nail it on every level.

To start, the Communal outpost in Oceanside is open from 7 am to 7 pm but will soon be open until 10 pm. For those local to the area, this should be a welcome addition to the neighborhood and for folks outside of Oceanside it’s worth a visit or considering for your next event.

Ninja CM-401 Coffee Maker Review For 2021

15-12-2021 · Ninja CM401 – Features and Benefits: Brew Styles: The Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker is a conspicuous machine that offers 4 different brewing options. These include Classic, Rich, Over Ice, and Specialty.

15-12-2021

The Ninja CM-401 is a compact and affordable single-serve machine with a lot of features and taste. It has a unique design that fits with any modern theme and 6 serving sizes.

The main idea behind the product is to perfect a coffee maker that caters to the average human’s needs. Although it works just like any other single-serve coffee machine, it stands out in many aspects.

Perhaps the most outstanding of these features is the Specialty Function. Through this, a small amount of concentrate is let through, which you can use to make other forms of coffee. Some good uses of this include when making espressos and macchiato.

  • Specialty Brew function.
  • Easy to clean and descale.
  • Brewing can be scheduled beforehand.
  • Strong and sturdy steel build.
  • More brew size options.
  • Compact in size.
  • Not very programmable.
  • The carafe is glass and not thermal.

Single-serve coffee makers are the go-to options for people on a budget. They’re fast, cheap, and require little to no setup. Oftentimes, those fancy espresso machines can end up costing you upwards of ,000! For a layman, that’s just too much.

If you want a quick and easy fix to your everyday coffee cravings, single-serve machines are the best. They don’t have a lot of programs and you can’t control the strength or temperature. But they allow some level of customization.

So is a single-serve coffee maker suited for you? And how do you which is the right one? Here are a few things to consider:

  • Brand reputation.
  • Special features and brews.
  • Cold brews (optional).
  • Cup size and capacity.
  • Type of carafe (glass or thermal).
  • Programmability (scheduling, temperature control, etc.).
  • Interface and overall design.

Ninja CM401 – Features and Benefits:

Brew Styles:

The Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker is a conspicuous machine that offers 4 different brewing options. These include Classic, Rich, Over Ice, and Specialty.

Classic and Rich Functions:

The Classic and Rich options are just what they sound like. While Classic provides a balanced and more neutral flavor, Rich will impart a stronger, more robust taste. Both are great for when you want to have some form of control over the strength of your coffee.

Over Ice:

For making cold coffee and other forms of iced coffee, the Over Ice option is a handy tool. Not many people will be using it. But if you’re the type who prefers a cold beverage during the summer instead of a hot one, go for it.

Specialty Brew:

Finally, we have the most unique feature: the Specialty Brew. This is an all-in-one brew that dispenses a highly saturated amount of coffee, which itself isn’t much. However, you can use this concentrate to brew up other drinks. These include cappuccinos, lattes, macchiato, espressos, and many other barista-style drinks.

In this way, the versatility of your coffee machine expands. However, the taste will not be the same as the real thing.

Intuitive Interface and Design:

One of the most unique and perhaps the most outstanding feature of the Ninja CM401 is its intuitive interface and design. The design includes a gracefully suspended brew group hoisted between a support bar and the water tank. The tank is transparent and has markings at key points to indicate how much you should fill it.

Take a look at the interface yourself:

As for the control panel, nothing could be more dynamic. At the very top, you have a clock that lets you choose a specific time of day to brew the coffee. Below that, you have two options: Stay Warm, and Delay Brew. Stay Warm will transfer some ambient heat to the hot plate to keep the coffee warm. And Delay Brew lets you automatically brew at a specified time.

Underneath that, a rotary dial lets you select how much you want to brew. There are 6 brew sizes to choose from, along with a complimentary glass carafe. Right below that, you have four rectangular buttons to choose the 4 brew styles from. The Specialty Brew Button has a strong metallic color to make it pop out more.

At the end, you have two more buttons: Power, and Clean. We’ll be looking at how easy it is to clean in later sections.

Material Choice:

As for the materials, the entire frame is made from stainless steel. Consumer-grade steel is a good choice for many reasons, but mainly due to its cheapness and rigidity. It also has great thermal conductivity, allowing maximum heat to flow out and into the hot plate. This also prevents overheating of the unit.

Steel is not known to be water-resistant. It does survive a few splashes. But with time and abuse, the water will deteriorate the surface. Some parts are made from ABS plastic, which can survive the extreme heat of the boiler. But the rest of the unit may suffer from rusting if kept in a humid environment.

Highest Quality Standard:

The Ninja CM401 has a lot to offer in terms of quality and taste. And this claim is backed up by the fact that it has received an SCA Golden Cup for Standard Brewing. There are a few factors that account for this, but the chief feature is their Thermal Flavor Extraction.

This is a specialized flavor enhancer technology that maintains the integrity of your coffee. It maintains the right temperature to allow for maximum saturation of the grounds. As a result, the grounds release the maximum amount of aroma and flavor. And this in turn allows both to fully develop before the coffee is finally dripped.

Because of this, each cup of coffee has even saturation. So you won’t find some cups tasting stronger than others. Nor will there be flavor “hot spots”, which would result in loss of precious flavor.

Consistent Temperature:

A consistent temperature is maintained all throughout the brewing and boiling process. This is to ensure your coffee doesn’t get cold. But another reason why the temperature is so important is that the flavor depends on it. It prevents your unit from overheating, which in turn reduces the risk of your grounds burning.

Coffee Blooming:

One more unique aspect of this coffee maker is the coffee blooming. This refers to the act of slightly dampening the coffee bed in order to release some trapped carbon dioxide. This gas is generated during roasting, and can poorly affect the taste. Coffee blooming let’s all the gas escape, allowing for maximum saturation of the grounds and thus a more even extraction.

6 Brew Sizes:

Everyone likes their coffee different. And it’s not just about flavor or brew style. Some people drink more coffee than others, and some need an entire jug for their whole family. In order to make things easier and to reduce wastage, the Ninja CM401 allows you to choose from 6 different brew sizes.

Choose from a single cup, XL single cup, half carafe, full carafe, travel mug, and XL travel mug. There are markings on the water reservoir for each of these 6 brew sizes. So you only need to add in the amount of water you need, which will save you from wasting water.

There’s a large dial on the control panel that lets you choose the brew size. This means that you only brew as much coffee as is needed, which isn’t something you can do on a regular coffee machine. Another unique aspect is that it’s able to accommodate larger travel mugs and entire jugs, which is uncommon for most machines.

A glass carafe is provided with the unit, but since it’s not thermal it will quickly go cold. So you’ll need to either drink it right away or transfer it to a different mug.

Folding Frother:

What would a coffee machine be without its frother? While frothers aren’t anything new, the Ninja CM401 takes on a new twist to it. Its frothing wand is foldable, meaning it sits snug by the coffee maker’s side and can be pulled out when you need it.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to talk about here. The boiler for both the steam and the coffee are the same, which isn’t uncommon on a manual coffee machine. But you don’t get to choose the style or texture of the steam, which is a bit of a bummer.

But it’s not the only product in its category to not do so. And with the given price range, a low-feature frother isn’t too bad. The steam is still rich and saturated and will whip you up a decent froth.

Easy Descaling:

The designers of the Ninja CM401 have decided to make it easy to clean and descale. Scale formation is a natural phenomenon where boiling water can release calcium deposits.

Descaling refers to removing this scale using a special solution that dissolves it. While many machines come with their own descaling solution or require you to buy some, the Ninja needs none of that. Instead, you can simply use homemade solutions from water and white vinegar, as well as any store-bought tablets and solutions.

Cleaning:

As for cleaning and general maintenance, the exterior is extremely easy to wipe down. Since it’s made of stainless steel, sludge and residual coffee hardly tend to stay. You can wipe it using a damp cloth and you’re good to go.

The glass carafe only requires a mild wash with warm water and a non-corrosive soap. If there is too much residue stuck at the bottom, simply use a soft foam brush. Wire brushes are discouraged as they will damage the beauty of the glass.

And if all that is too complicated for you, just remember that you can pop the carafe and the lid into the dishwasher. But they’re only safe on the top rack though. So take note of that.

Delay Brew Function:

One interesting feature available on the Ninja CM401 that not many coffee machines have is the Delay Brew function. Through this, you’re able to set a time for when you want the unit to automatically brew your coffee for you. So it has some level of programmability.

You can set the time using the clock on the control panel. One use of this feature is to have the coffee brewing when you wake up in the morning. You won’t have to manually set the instructions again, and you’ll have your coffee ready for you in no time. However, you can’t schedule it for every day. So each day, you’ll have to program it again.

Luckily, in most cases, you’ll just need to press the Delay Brew button, since you would have already set the instructions from the previous time.

Value for The Money:

The Ninja CM401 seems like a decent product for your everyday needs. But is it really the best? Are there other brands that give you more in a much cheaper price?

Well, for starters, this is a manual coffee machine, which shouldn’t cost too much, to begin with. Its price is slightly above 0, which is quite normal for coffee machines. It is slightly higher than the average, which is around to .

I think the main reason why its value is so high is its premium design. Most coffee machines adopt the same old boring look. The Ninja CM401 has a much more visually appealing design that uses much more refined materials than other machines.

Another reason for the high price is its SCA certification and Thermal Flavor Extraction. In all honesty, the flavor is a bit more saturated, which only makes the experience better. And the best part is that even the iced coffee products you can make from this machine are not watered down. So there’s great attention to taste and flavor enhancement.

But you have to consider the fact that this machine cannot be used for anything other than regular coffee. Yes, there’s the Specialty Brew function. But that’s only to get you started with the coffee. You’ll still need to put in some additional work in order to brew that type of coffee.

It does have the Delay Brew function, which makes it a more advanced product than other brands. But due to its limitations, it’s safe to say that the pros pretty much balance out the cons. So the price is worth it if you want that extra level of programmability.

FAQs for The Ninja CM401:

Yes and no. You see, the Ninja CM401 is only for regular, non-pressurized coffee. Since coffee in the CM401 is not made under pressure, it doesn’t count as espresso. However, you can use the Specialty mode to get a concentrate that can be used as a base for an espresso. The coffee that you get won’t really taste like espresso, but it will be close to it.
Personally, the taste seems a bit off and feels like a poorly-executed imitation of the real thing. But if you really want espresso, either you must purchase an espresso machine, or just buy it online. Both can cost a lot, so the Specialty method is a good money-saver.

You can, to some extent. While it’s not a fully programmable machine, it does give you a lot of laxity in terms of what you can make and how much of it. You can choose from 4 styles of brew, including the Specialty brew with imitates different types of coffee. And you can choose from up to 6 different brew sizes.
As for pre-scheduling, the Ninja CM401 has a Delay Brew function that lets you do just that. You can schedule brewing for a later time. So it has some level of programmability. But it’s not as programmable as those fully-automated coffee machines.

Taking care of your Ninja CM401 is quick and easy. Here’s what you can do to maintain it:Avoid spilling any coffee over the control panel and digital screen. Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth. Wash out the carafe with a mild warm soap solution.Run a descaling cycle every week or two with white vinegar and water.

Brush off dust and residue from the parts every month.

Black Rifle Coffee Company has unfortunately not lived up to the promise of being a rare cafe that is both conservative and patriotic, with the suspicions of many arising around November 2020 following their public callout of Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager who is on trial after shooting and killing both a violent felon and pedophile in what appeared to be self-defense during riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin Summer 2020.

The ‘conservative’ business had previously publicly condemned Rittenhouse after Blaze podcaster Elijah Schafer posted a meme photo advertisement featuring the AR-15 wielding teen wearing a Black Rifle Coffee Company shirt with the caption, “Kyle Rittenhouse drinks the best coffee in America.”

“We don’t traffic in national tragedy and to us, that’s what this is,” said a spokeswoman for Black Rifle Coffee. “We are not legal experts or members of law enforcement. We fully support all law enforcement officials and believe in the integrity of the legal system.”

“We did have a conversation with Schaffer, and he understands that the post was a mistake.”

Apparently, the deliberate distancing from Rittenhouse was not enough for Black Rifle Coffee Company founder Evan Hafer, as he recently decided to sit down for an interview with The New York Times just a few months ago. Hafer took the opportunity to tell people how he REALLY feels about right-wingers, offering The Times some colorful commentary about his feelings of former supporters that were upset from the Black Rifle-Rittenhouse controversy.

The Rittenhouse episode may have cost the company thousands of customers, but, Hafer believed, it also allowed Black Rifle to draw a line in the sand. “It’s such a repugnant group of people,” Hafer said. “It’s like the worst of American society, and I got to flush the toilet of some of those people that kind of hijacked portions of the brand.” Then again, what Hafer insisted was a “superclear delineation” was not too clear to everyone, as Munchel’s choice of headgear vividly demonstrated.

“The racism [expletive] really pisses me off,” Hafer said. “I hate racist, Proud Boy-ish people. Like, I’ll pay them to leave my customer base. I would gladly chop all of those people out of my [expletive] customer database and pay them to get the [expletive] out.” [NY Times]

The founder of the cafe also gloated that he scrapped a previously planned coffee bag design because a friend told him that white supremacists supposedly co-opted it to resemble the murder of George Floyd.

Hafer and Best were talking in a glorified supply closet in the Salt Lake City offices, where potential designs for new coffee bags were hanging on the wall. One of them featured a Renaissance-style rendering of St. Michael the Archangel, a patron saint of military personnel, shooting a short-barreled rifle. In Afghanistan and Iraq, Hafer knew a number of squad mates who had a St. Michael tattoo; for a time, he wore into battle a St. Michael pendant that a Catholic friend gave him. But while the St. Michael design was being mocked up, Hafer said he learned from a friend at the Pentagon that an image of St. Michael trampling on Satan had been embraced by white supremacists because it was reminiscent of the murder of George Floyd. Now any plans for the coffee bag had been scrapped. “This won’t see the light of day,” Hafer said. [NY Times]

Big League Politics contacted Black Rifle Coffee quoting their past comments and asked if there were any further comments about Rittenhouse in wake of newly released evidence seemingly vindicating the teenager. No response has been received as of now.

After 150 years of usefulness, the coffee can is going extinct. Folgers, the nation’s largest coffee purveyor, is retiring its metal cans starting in September, and replacing them with a high-tech plastic container that keeps ground beans airtight.

Do they make metal coffee cans anymore?

After more than 150 years, Folgers is phasing out its metal coffee cans in favor of plastic canisters. No more storing your hard-earned cash in a buried coffee can. Gone will be the countless crafts projects you can make from empty cans.

What are Folgers coffee cans made of?

But with ground coffee from Starbuck’s and others already running at more than a can, a few cents more should not make a big difference, Panjabi said. Some environmental groups could be alarmed by the difficulty of recycling the canisters, made of high density polyethylene, compared with easy-to-recycle steel.

What metal are coffee cans made from?

Modern Cans Of course, tin is only the traditional way to make cans. Many cans today are made of aluminum or different types of treat metal, as long as that metal can be formed into the can shape and is resistant to corrosion and rust.

Did Folgers change their coffee?

The recipe, which obviously has changed since the 1800’s, despite Folgers claims, switched the percentage of arabica to robusta beans used in their classic roast in 2015, changing from 60/40 arabica to robusta, to 40/60 arabica to robusta. Those with a nose for excellent coffee left Folgers behind long ago.

Are Folgers coffee containers airtight?

Folgers, the nation’s largest coffee purveyor, is retiring its metal cans starting in September, and replacing them with a high-tech plastic container that keeps ground beans airtight.

Are tin cans still used?

No cans currently in wide use are composed primarily or wholly of tin; that term rather reflects the nearly exclusive use in cans, until the second half of the 20th century, of tinplate steel, which combined the physical strength and relatively low price of steel with the corrosion resistance of tin.

Are aluminum and tin the same thing?

Tin, when compared to steel, is more inexpensive. Aluminum is often confused with tin, such as tin foil etc. Aluminum has replaced tin in industrial applications, such as for cans. Pure tin is too weak, so it is alloyed with other metals to make it stronger, whereas aluminum is a much stronger metal than tin.

Is tin metal toxic?

Tin has no known natural biological role in living organisms. It is not easily absorbed by animals and humans. The low toxicity is relevant to the widespread use of tin in dinnerware and canned food. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea have been reported after ingesting canned food containing 200 mg/kg of tin.

Is Folgers low quality?

In terms of quality, the Folgers blend is mediocre. Obviously it’s at least passable, as millions of people drink it regularly.

Is Folgers or Maxwell House coffee better?

For an average instant coffee drinker, Folgers will give a better overall flavor profile when compared to Maxwell House. This is not to say Folgers is a much better option, but it edges out Maxwell House coffee. If you’re looking for a fresh cup of coffee with the best flavor, the Folgers is your friend.

Why is Folgers coffee so good?

There are several reasons why Folgers coffee is below average at best. Folgers uses a blend of 60% inferior and bitter-tasting robusta beans and 40% of the preferred arabica beans to balance out the flavor.

Why are soft drink cans made from aluminium?

Aluminium cans are more malleable and lighter than steel cans (aluminium is one-third as heavy as steel), and also do not rust or corrode. Aluminium is alloyed with small amounts of different metals like magnesium or manganese to give it the properties needed for each specific task. Aluminium cans are not magnetic.

Why are aluminum cans coated with plastic film on the inside?

For decades, aluminium can manufacturers have lined the inside of their cans with plastic. Why? Well, it’s to protect the beverage from the can… and also to protect the can from the beverage.
