Keep in mind that dark or bittersweet chocolate may not melt as easily, resulting in small chocolate specks in your coffee.
- If you don't have an espresso machine or a Moka pot to make espresso, you can substitute regular instant coffee. Stir approximately 2 heaped teaspoons of instant coffee (or adjust to taste) with 1/4 cup of boiling water.

If these tools aren't available, add hot (but not boiling) milk to a shaker or jar, tightly close the container, and shake for about 1-2 minutes until the milk becomes frothy. Personally, I prefer my caffe mocha with more milk!
- Homemade mocha sauce (chocolate sauce): Combine 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon of milk or water, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and hot espresso in a cup. Stir until all the ingredients are well combined. Note that the liquid needs to be hot for the cocoa powder to fully incorporate. You can also add 1-2 cubes of chopped chocolate if desired. For a larger quantity of sauce (to pour over whipped cream as shown in the photos or to have extra for later use), combine all the ingredients in a small pot and briefly cook the sauce until thickened while whisking constantly.
