The latter ensures that this thermal carafe coffee maker brews in line with the Specialty Coffee Association's exacting standards.

- Bonus travel lid included, keeps coffee scorching for longer
- Handmade in the Netherlands from durable metal housings and sustainable plastics
CONS (-)
- More expensive than other carafe coffee makers
- Plastic parts can be fiddly and lead to leakage
The buzz surrounding this thermal carafe coffee maker is well-deserved. Its brewing capabilities are unmatched, thanks to its copper heating element that ensures exceptional consistency.
Typically found only in high-end espresso machines, this hot water system provides a consistent temperature range of 196º– 205º F, ideal for extracting maximum flavor from the coffee grounds.
One feature that sets this coffee maker apart is its attention to detail. For instance, it automatically shuts off when the water reservoir is empty, preventing any mishaps. This thoughtful design element ensures that you won't attempt to brew coffee without water or damage the machine.

Coffee brewing experts highly regard this thermal carafe due to its ingenious design. One notable feature is the cone-shaped brew-basket design, which maximizes flavor complexity through pre-immersion drip—something not commonly found in most coffee machines.
Additionally, users can experiment with their brew time. By adjusting the steep time, you can achieve a much stronger and richer brew. Trust me—you won't be disappointed.
In conclusion, the Technivorm Moccamaster exemplifies superior craftsmanship and consistently delivers an outstanding cup of coffee without any unnecessary complexities. It is the perfect choice for coffee lovers seeking high-quality design and performance.

This flexibility is particularly useful if you only want to make a few cups instead of the full 9 cup capacity.
It's worth noting that the OXO Brew 9 Cup Carafe Coffee Brewer measures 15 inches in height, which may be too tall for low countertops typically around 12 inches. However, if you appreciate meticulously crafted pour-over coffee, you may find the OXO Brew 9 Cup Carafe Coffee Brewer to be somewhat lacking in that area. Nevertheless, it excels at producing excellent daily coffee with minimal effort.
The general consensus is that the coffee made with this brewer possesses a superior taste compared to standard coffee makers. Although a minority report finding the coffee slightly too bitter for their liking, this is likely influenced by the choice of beans used. Thermal Carafe Coffeemaker Buyers Guide
If you're confused by the choices available for thermal carafe coffee makers, our guide below can help answer common questions associated with these brewers:
How To Choose The Best Thermal Carafe?
When choosing your first thermal carafe, consider the following factors:
How Easy Is It To Use?
Consider the level of intuitiveness and the number of buttons, LED displays, and steps in the brewing process. Some thermal carafe brewers are designed for one-stop-shop brewing.
How Easy Is It To Clean?
Look for carafes with wider mouths for easy cleaning or those with auto-clean capabilities. However, keep in mind that you may still need to wipe the external parts to remove residue.
How Durable Is The Material?
Choose a thermal carafe made of sturdy materials like stainless steel, as cheap plastic can deteriorate quickly.
What Technology Does It Use?
Some thermal carafe coffee makers use specific technologies to mimic certain brewing styles. Ultimately, the best coffee maker is the one that suits your lifestyle.
What Features Do I Need?
Consider the essential features for you, and be aware that more advanced features may come at a higher price.
Temperature Control
The best thermal carafe coffee is typically brewed between temperatures of 195 - 205 degrees Fahrenheit. Some brewers may lag in delivering a consistent temperature, so if you want precision, choose a brewer approved by the Specialty Coffee Association.
1 or 10 cups of coffee?
Consider your brewing needs and whether you require a single-serve or multiple-cup capacity. Some brewers have multifunctionality to cater to smaller batches.
Other Points For Consideration
If you tend to forget things easily, look for a programmable timer that provides reminders. Consider whether you prefer a thermal carafe or a coffee maker with a hot plate.
Thermal Carafe vs Hot Plates
The main difference between thermal carafe coffee makers and those with hot plates is that thermal carafes keep your coffee warm without over-extraction. They are designed to maintain the temperature for hours after brewing, preventing bitterness and burnt flavors.
Coffeemaker Temp Problems?
To maintain the perfect brewing temperature and avoid wasting coffee, consider investing in a thermal carafe coffee maker. These coffee makers ensure that the brewing temperature is maintained for hours, eliminating the need to rush through multiple cups before they turn cold.
How Exactly Does A Thermal Coffee Maker Work?
Have you ever seen an old-school thermos or travel mug? Well, a thermal carafe coffee maker works on the same principle. It uses a double wall of stainless steel for insulation, keeping your coffee hot for longer durations. Some lower-quality brands may use plastic or a combination of stainless steel and BPA-free plastics. The vacuum-sealed design minimizes heat transfer, maintaining the flavor and freshness of your brew. While purists may be hesitant to let coffee sit for hours, thermal carafe coffee makers offer the convenience of consistent warmth.

Best Built-In Scale: Wolf Gourmet Programmable 10-Cup Coffee Maker
- Dimensions: 10.83 x 9.06 x 14.38 inches
- Brewing capacity: 10 cups
- Descaling indicator: Yes
- Programmable: Yes
The Wolf Gourmet Coffee Maker not only features the iconic red knobs (also available in black or stainless steel), but it also offers the quality and precise temperature control expected from Wolf. Full disclosure, this coffee maker matches my Wolf Countertop Oven, Griddle, Stand Mixer, and Knife Set, so it's no surprise that I'm a fan of their kitchen appliances—beyond the matching hardware. With its stainless steel construction and thermal carafe, this coffee maker keeps your coffee warm. Plus, the front-loading basket eliminates the risk of bumping into upper cabinets.
The coffee maker incorporates two knobs and an LED display panel. The top knob's mode-select bezel allows you to choose between manual, Accu-Brew, or clean mode, while the knob itself controls the brew strength in Accu-Brew mode.
When using Accu-Brew mode, the built-in scale ensures that you add the right amount of coffee. Here's how it works: Set the desired number of cups, add water, select the brew strength, and then add coffee to the filter basket until the scale icon appears on the LED panel. If the icon doesn't appear, you haven't added enough coffee based on your selections. If you accidentally add too much coffee, the display will flash bars over the scale until you either remove the excess grounds or add more water to recalibrate.
The bottom knob sets the clock, programs the coffee cycle, and determines the cup quantity. The display panel not only shows the time but also provides information on the coffee scale, brewing status, time since brew (up to an hour), and reminds you when to change the water filter. The detachable water reservoir makes filling and cleaning easy, and the water filter can be removed if your tap water quality is subpar. Wolf excels at extracting the perfect amount of flavor for a superior coffee-drinking experience, making this one of the best drip coffee makers available.
Pros:
- Removable water tank
- Iconic, swappable knobs
- Thermal carafe
- Adjustable brew strength
- Auto pause
- Rainmaker showerhead
Cons:

Hand-assembled with premium materials, the Ratio Eight consists of precision-machine aluminum, a handblown borosilicate glass carafe and supply lines, hardwood, and a stainless steel showerhead. A thermal carafe option is available, though it comes at an extra cost. The detachable power cord allows for convenient storage on your countertop, and despite its complex appearance, it's incredibly easy to use. With just one button to turn it on, you can sit back until your coffee is ready. The coffee maker goes through various phases—bloom, brew, and ready—and each phase is illuminated on the side of the machine for easy monitoring.
Water is delivered at or close to an ideal temperature of 200°F for brewing coffee, thanks to its sensors that adjust the brewing time based on the volume of water. - Programmable: Yes
A coffee maker with a built-in grinder? Yes, please! I love experimenting with different types of freshly roasted coffee beans—light, medium, and dark—and the Breville Grind Control Coffee Maker fulfills that desire with its integrated stainless steel burr grinder. The grinder can hold up to half a pound of coffee beans, and its six adjustable settings allow me to choose the desired strength for each type of bean. To complete our list of the best thermal carafe coffee makers, we have a manual model from the industry-leading brand, Melitta. This coffee maker is perfect for those who need a portable solution for camping, hiking, or RV trips. It eliminates the need for electricity while still providing the benefits of fresh and flavorful coffee on the go.
In addition to the stainless steel carafe, this coffee maker includes a brewing cone and filters, allowing you to make up to 10 small cups of coffee by pouring off-boiling water over the coffee grounds. Nonetheless, the Melitta offers a great alternative for those who want to experience the pour-over method without investing significant time or effort. It is also the most portable solution among the thermal carafe coffee makers on our list.
Pros:

FAQs
1) How long does coffee stay warm in a thermal carafe?
The best thermal carafe coffee makers can keep your coffee warm for up to 12 hours. However, most decent thermal carafes will retain heat for anywhere from 2 to 6 hours.
2) What is the difference between a thermal carafe and a thermos?
A thermal carafe coffee maker will keep coffee warm for a few hours, while a thermos ensures that the coffee stays hot all day long.
3) What types of thermal carafe coffee makers are available?
The most popular type of machine in this category is the drip coffee maker. These machines typically brew larger batches of coffee, and the thermal carafe is a valuable feature. Drip coffee makers come with varying levels of programmability. Additionally, there are dual-brew coffee makers that can make single-serve pod-based coffee or whole carafes of freshly ground coffee. These machines often include a thermal carafe to keep the coffee warm for hours. There are also manual coffee makers available for those who need to brew coffee without access to electricity.
4) How should I store my coffee beans?
It is best to store coffee beans or ground coffee in an airtight container in a cool and dark place. Heat, sunlight, oxygen, and moisture can all affect the taste and aroma of coffee beans. For optimal results, grind whole coffee beans just before brewing.
5) What is descaling and why is it important?
Descaling is the process of removing mineral residue that builds up inside your coffee machine over time. If you don't descale your machine regularly, it can affect the quality of extraction and potentially cause breakdowns. We recommend descaling every couple of months, or more frequently for daily use. You can use a descaling agent or a mixture of vinegar and water in equal parts. Run the brew cycle with this solution, and then run several cycles with plain water to ensure all residual descaling solution is removed.
Other High-Quality Drip Coffee Makers
If you're in search of a compact coffee maker with a good thermal carafe and a simple interface, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT is an excellent choice. Standing at approximately 15 inches tall with a footprint of 11 by 6 inches, it offers a five-year warranty, which surpasses that of any other options we recommend. Technivorm brewers, including the KBT and its various models, are highly regarded by a dedicated fan base. The KBT also features a unique switch on the filter basket that allows you to adjust the duration of coffee steeping. During our testing, all of our tasters enjoyed the coffee brewed by the KBT, although it didn't surpass the taste of the Bonavita Connoisseur or the 9-cup OXO machines. However, it's worth noting that the KBT comes at a significantly higher price point than our top pick and lacks certain user-friendly features like the OXO's programmable timer and descaling reminders.

We had high hopes for the Breville Precision Brewer, a well-built machine that usually retails for around $300. Boasting numerous brew settings, this coffee maker appeals to craft-coffee enthusiasts. However, we found it challenging to get started. The first step involves assessing the hardness of your water on a scale of 1 to 5 using the test strip provided. Even after that, it took us over two hours to achieve a satisfactory brew. While the machine offers extensive customization options, such as adjusting pre-infusion/bloom duration, water temperature, and flow rate, it has a steep learning curve for those who simply want a good cup of coffee. Additionally, the machine is quite noisy. While its capabilities are impressive, the complexity and high price make it a less suitable choice for most coffee drinkers.
Surprisingly, despite its clunky appearance, the Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker produced exceptionally good coffee and was favored for its flavor by our expert, Chi Sum Ngai, during our 2020 testing. However, we cannot confidently recommend this machine due to a recurring issue with incomplete water tank drainage. The residue of about half an inch of water left behind after each brew could potentially result in mold or mildew development. Furthermore, we have encountered an unusually high number of customer reviews reporting early breakdowns in the Ninja coffee maker. Given its one-year warranty, the investment of $200 seems unjustified.
The Braun 10-Cup MultiServe Coffee Machine turned out to be the worst coffee maker we tested. Unfortunately, the coffee it brewed consistently tasted unpleasant, resembling burnt gas-station coffee. Despite offering multiple settings and features for customization, including single-cup and over-ice options, the poor quality of the coffee overshadowed any potential benefits.
The Zojirushi EC-YTC100XB 10-cup coffee maker brewed coffee at an incredibly slow pace, taking more than 15 minutes to make a full pot. In addition, we discovered that regardless of the number of brewing attempts we made using the machine, the resulting coffee consistently lacked flavor. However, the EC-YTC100XB does excel in its heat retention, featuring the best-performing carafe in our tests.
Similar to our highly recommended Bonavita Connoisseur, the Cuisinart CPO-850 offers a compact design with the added convenience of a machine-brewed carafe. While this coffee maker is easy to use, we found the flavor of the coffee to be relatively one-dimensional, occasionally even tasting papery.
An earlier version of the Bonavita Connoisseur, the Bonavita BV1900TS, impressed us with its overall flavor and balance during our testing. It brews a liter of coffee in just 5 minutes and 20 seconds, including a pre-infusion period. However, it has a design flaw where the filter basket sits directly on the carafe, resulting in a drafty gap underneath the machine's showerhead. Additionally, the carafe can be drippy and cumbersome to handle.
The Brim 8 Cup Pour Over Coffee Maker seems overpriced considering its lack of programmability and the significant amount of heat that escapes during the brewing process due to a large gap between the showerhead and filter basket. The glass Chemex-shaped carafe cools quickly and lacks a lid. After 30 minutes, the hot plate automatically shuts off, further contributing to heat loss.
We also tested other Bonavita brewers similar to our top pick, the Connoisseur, including the Bonavita Metropolitan BV1901PW. Featuring a lightweight black plastic construction and a glass carafe, this machine fell short in terms of coffee quality compared to the OXO machines. Most individuals would likely prefer a coffee maker with a thermal carafe.
We put two "pour-over-style" brewers from Motif to the test: the Motif Elements and the smaller Motif Essential (a downsized version of the Elements). However, these models are currently difficult to find on the market. The Elements offers the convenience of a removable water reservoir, but overall, the construction of the machine is subpar. It is also larger in size, and the resulting coffee tasted flat and lacked complexity. The Essential occupies less counter space but produces brews of similar quality. The interface of both models proved to be flimsy, although the Elements does have the advantage of a removable water reservoir.
The Cuisinart Brew Central Coffee Maker DCC-1200, which was part of our initial testing, remains one of the bestselling coffee makers on Amazon. However, in comparison to the $150-plus machines we tested, the coffee it produced seemed dull.
For enthusiasts who are willing to make a substantial investment, there are several high-end, limited-production coffee makers available on the market. Clive Coffee's Ratio Eight and the Chemex Ottomatic are two notable examples. These machines are designed for connoisseurs seeking the experience of making pour-over coffee manually, with a pre-infusion step and even water distribution. However, the benefits of these machines are difficult to quantify, especially considering their high price points. Additionally, these models are not as widely accessible as our top recommendations.
After extensive testing involving more than 75 pots of coffee, we have determined that the Espro P3 is the top French press for producing a bold yet balanced brew.
Our years of testing have led us to recommend the OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker as the best option. It consistently produces smooth, well-balanced, and delicious cold brew.
After more than 120 hours of research and testing, we believe the Breville Bambino Plus is the best espresso machine for beginners.
After testing various coffee grinders since 2015, the Baratza Encore remains our top choice due to its consistent performance, reliability, and repairability.
After multiple rounds of testing since 2013, we stand by the Cuisinart CPK-17 as our favorite electric kettle. It offers fast boiling, accurate temperature control, and ease of use—all at an affordable price.
Among the coffee makers priced under $100 that we have tested, the Ninja CE251 produces the best-tasting coffee and offers great ease of use.
We have tasted over 150 cups of coffee to identify the best pour-over setup, including an easy-to-use dripper, a reliable coffee grinder, and an accurate scale.
Keurig machines brew coffee that is highly priced and, in our opinion, lacks sufficient strength and flavor. Moreover, they often experience malfunctions within the warranty period and contribute to environmental waste.
While all Nespresso machines produce identical drinks, we recommend the Essenza Mini due to its compact size, affordability, and lack of unnecessary features.
