Soleluna

Without a doubt, you must make a stop at Adams Morgan's Soleluna. This small yet remarkable coffee shop specializes in Ecuadorian Coffee and homemade pastries, including their famous guava croissants. The best part? Their lattes are priced at an affordable $3.50, which is quite rare for the DC area. Despite the cost, the quality of their offerings is not compromised — everything is made from scratch with utmost care. For a unique treat, be sure to visit between 7-8 a.m. to enjoy their scrumptious pastries fresh out of the oven.

Elle

Nestled away in Mount Pleasant's Lamont Plaza commercial district, Elle is a charming all-day cafe that has garnered significant attention in the city. As soon as you step inside, you'll understand why. From the cozy front seating area with large windows to the intimate back dining room, the space invites you to spend a leisurely few hours. Elle offers an extensive menu, ranging from creative breakfast sandwiches in the morning to highly-rated dinners in the evening. However, when it comes to coffee, they may not prioritize it as their main draw. While their espresso drinks and drip coffee are decent, they seem to focus more on creating an inviting atmosphere rather than solely being a coffee destination.

Maketto on H Street NE

Maketto by @frenchieyankeeCoffee: 4 out of 5

  • Maketto's coffee is roasted by nearby Vigilante Coffee, adding to its reputation as one of the best coffee spots in the city. The latte they serve is particularly noteworthy and has become a favorite among customers. In fact, their matcha green tea drink has gained a lot of attention on Instagram and is considered one of the most Instagrammed drinks in D.C.
Vibe: 5 out of 5
  • When Maketto first opened, it completely transformed the H Street NE neighborhood into an area reminiscent of trendy Brooklyn neighborhoods in New York. The baristas are generally friendly and create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

Little Pearl on Capitol Hill SE

  • Little Pearl is a Vietnamese-inspired coffee shop that offers unique beverages like Vietnamese iced coffee, banana latte, and their very own homemade white sesame and hazelnut milks. Their creativity and dedication to crafting exceptional coffee have earned them a place among DC's top cafes.
Vibe: 4 out of 5
  • Little Pearl has done an outstanding job of utilizing a historic cottage to create an on-brand and inviting space. The cafe's layout and structure have remained unchanged due to its historical significance. However, they have managed to cultivate a clean and cozy atmosphere with a few elegant touches. Don't miss the beautifully designed wallpaper in the bathroom! Free Wi-Fi is available, and there are both indoor and outdoor seating options.

Compass Coffee

With 12 locations spread across the District and Northern Virginia, Compass Coffee is a local success story. Their Shaw-based roastery has gained popularity due to their appealing and modern cafe designs that encourage customers to stay longer. Many locals consider Compass Coffee to be one of the best coffee options in the area. However, during my recent visit to their original 7th Street NW location, my experience was not as impressive. The service felt disinterested and lacking enthusiasm. The coffee, while decent, had a slight charred taste on the finish, which shouldn't be the case for a well-established coffee shop. Despite the comfortable and vibrant atmosphere of the cafe, my overall impression was that my relationship with Compass Coffee had reached its end.

Seylou Bakery

For a long time, Peregrine Espresso was a reliable go-to spot for coffee in DC. Now, they have expanded into the roasting game with Small Plane Coffee, garnering attention as one of the most prominent names in specialty coffee. However, I recently discovered that Seylou Bakery, located in the Shaw district, is another excellent option for coffee. This minimal-modern bakery and cafe, which exudes shades of Copenhagen charm, seemed like the perfect place to get a great cup of coffee. Upon arrival, I noticed that the coffee bar, albeit attractively set up, didn't appear to be frequented by many customers. However, the same person who took my order at the bakery side of the establishment expertly prepared my cappuccino and brewed coffee, both made with Small Planes' beans. The coffee had a light and modern profile, and the quality was unquestionable. However, the cappuccino, made using Small Planes' Gateway roast (currently 100% Peruvian Puno), fell short of expectations. It lacked the strength and temperature that make a truly exceptional cappuccino. I decided to save my search for the perfect cup of cappuccino for Peregrine Espresso later on.

Lost Sock Roasters

Nico Cabrera and Jeff Yerxa, both alumni of American University, had been discussing starting a business together since their graduation in 2014. While their original idea didn't come to fruition, their decision to embark on the journey of roasting coffee has certainly paid off. Lost Sock Roasters, their roasting venture, has achieved remarkable success in a relatively short amount of time. They recently opened their first retail space in the Children's National Takoma Theatre. If you can't make it to their retail location, you can find their exceptional coffee at various local farmers markets. I highly recommend visiting either the Petworth or Silver Spring farmers markets on Saturdays. The Lost Sock Roasters Colombian pour-over, sourced from the woman-owned Finca El Oasis, stood out among its competitors and was truly exceptional. It easily matched the quality of the coffee I had tried the previous day at Call Your Mother; it's no surprise that both establishments roast their coffee in-house.

The Wydown

After successfully operating as a pop-up, The Wydown has finally found its permanent home on 14th Street, near the bustling U Street corner. On a sunny Saturday morning, it was no surprise to see a line stretching out the door and the cozy interior filled with people eagerly awaiting their drinks. The cashier demonstrated an impressive level of knowledge, patiently guiding me through the various options. The coffee selection at The Wydown includes a range of reputable roasters, from Scandinavian brands to Pennsylvania's finest roaster, Passenger Coffee. Their ability to curate a selection of high-quality beans is commendable. However, on that particular morning, it seemed that the staff was struggling to keep up with the demand, resulting in some inconsistencies in the coffee preparation. Given the price they charge for a medium-sized cup of drip coffee, it's crucial that they maintain a high standard of quality and bring out the full potential of the beans they use.

The Village Cafe

As I strolled through DC's Union Market neighborhood, I was impressed by the enduring presence of its historic businesses. One such establishment is The Village Cafe, a new and trendy cafe opened in 2018 by a group of DC natives with a commitment to their community. Located in close proximity to Dupont Circle's renowned Politics & Prose bookstore, The Village Cafe shares a connection with the bookstore, allowing customers to move seamlessly between the two spaces. The cafe is often filled with patrons enjoying their coffee and browsing through books, reminiscent of the 1990s coffee shop culture. The coffee I ordered, a cup of Tanzanian coffee, didn't particularly stand out, but the barista, who clearly had a deep understanding of coffee, swiftly prepared a cortado using Lone Oak coffee from Virginia's scenic Shenandoah Valley. This particular combination of excellent espresso and serene atmosphere elevated my experience at The Village Cafe.

Peregrine Espresso

No visit to the area is complete without stopping by the vibrant Union Market. This food hall turned bustling destination showcases a mix of old and new businesses, offering a variety of dining options. Peregrine Espresso, known for their popular counter, is a prominent feature at the front of the market. They exclusively serve their own Small Planes Coffee. On a busy Saturday during peak brunch hours, the cafe was bustling with activity. Despite the rush, I managed to sample their iced coffee, a shot of espresso, and a cappuccino, each prepared by different baristas. The cappuccino was well-executed, highlighting the skill of the barista. However, the espresso, brewed with Small Planes' Gateway roast, fell short in the hands of a different barista. The iced coffee, on the other hand, emerged as the standout. A blend of Colombian and Ethiopian beans, it offered a crisp and light profile without any hint of weakness. It was truly delicious.

Big Bear Cafe in Bloomingdale

Big Bear Cafe by @frenchieyankeeCoffee: 4 out of 5

  • Big Bear Cafe distinguishes itself with its choice of roaster — they brew coffee from Ceremony Coffee, a renowned roastery based in Baltimore, Maryland. They serve a variety of hot drinks, as well as cold brew and decaf options. Their latte, in particular, stands out for its smooth and comforting taste.
Vibe: 5 out of 5
  • Weddings are a common occurrence at Big Bear Cafe, which is a testament to its unique charm. The exterior of the cafe features ivy-covered walls, while the patio boasts an abundance of lush plants. The cozy interior is adorned with wooden floors, tables, and a bar. The overall atmosphere is inviting and cozy.
Accessibility: 3 out of 5
  • Big Bear Cafe is located in the charming neighborhood of Bloomingdale. However, it is not easily accessible via Metro. The nearest station, Shaw Station on the Yellow Line, is a 13-minute walk away. Alternatively, if you prefer cycling, there is a Capital Bikeshare station nearby.
Gram-ability: 5 out of 5
  • As one of the most photographed alleyways in DC, Blagden Alley houses Big Bear Cafe. Its rustic charm, with exposed brick walls and open pipes, is perfect for capturing stunning photos. The large garage door adds to the cafe's unique aesthetic.

Harrar Coffee & Roastery

DC's Ethiopian ex-pat community, known to be the largest in the United States outside of Ethiopia itself, has played a significant role in shaping the local coffee culture. Ethiopian cafes like Harrar Coffee & Roastery have been a part of the region's coffee scene for many years. Harrar Coffee & Roastery, located on Georgia Avenue, offers a unique and authentic experience. Tucked away mid-block, the cafe has a distinct charm. Upon entering, you'll find a line of metal canisters bearing a range of coffee options, allowing customers to choose their preferred roast from light to dark. I opted for the Yirhama Yirgacheffe, an heirloom coffee known for its bright and light characteristics. The coffee was smooth, crisp, and refreshingly light all at once. Its unique flavor didn't require any additional milk or sweetener. Inside the cafe, you'll find a group of gentlemen engaged in lively conversations, creating a vibrant atmosphere that adds to the overall experience.

La Colombe in Blagden Alley NW

La Colombe by @frenchieyankeeCoffee: 4 out of 5

  • La Colombe, a renowned Philadelphia-based roastery, has its DC flagship location in Blagden Alley. Their coffee is highly regarded for its quality and taste. For those with a sweet tooth, I recommend trying their "sweet latte," which is not listed on the menu. This indulgent latte incorporates sweetened condensed milk and is guaranteed to change your coffee experience forever.
Vibe: 4 out of 5
  • La Colombe's location in a historic alley adds to its appeal. The roastery is known for its philanthropic efforts, supporting charities like Charity Water. The atmosphere exudes coolness and encourages socializing without the distraction of Wi-Fi. So, leave your computer at home and bring a book instead to fully embrace the experience.
Accessibility: 5 out of 5
  • Getting to La Colombe is effortless. Simply take the Metro to Mt. Vernon Square Metro station and enjoy a three-minute stroll through the nearby alley. Despite the initial creepiness, you'll soon realize that you've stumbled upon one of DC's trendiest spots, housing top-rated restaurants and the exceptional La Colombe coffee shop.

Peregrine at Union Market NE

Photo of the outside of Union MarketUnion Market by @austinkgraffCoffee: 4 out of 5

  • Peregrine recently changed their coffee supplier from Counter Culture to locally roasted Small Planes Coffee (also owned by Peregrine). Some customers have noticed the switch, but the quality remains excellent.
Vibe: 3 out of 5
  • Located inside one of DC's trendiest indoor markets, Peregrine gets crowded on weekends. Weather permitting, it's ideal to find a seat outside. However, on weekdays (except for Mondays when it's closed), it's a fantastic place to work. With free Wi-Fi and pastries available for purchase from the nearby Bluebird Bakery, it's a winning choice.
Accessibility: 4 out of 5
  • NoMa Metro is a 10-minute walk away, but most people prefer to drive since parking is free at Union Market. Cyclists can also use the Capital Bikeshare station located right outside the market.
Gram-ability: 3 out of 5
  • Peregrine itself may not be very Instagrammable as it's just a stand, and there's a good chance someone might photobomb your shot. However, Union Market is incredibly picturesque, with a simple white sign, numerous food stands, and high ceilings that make for cool and stunning gram-worthy shots.

  • Swings has been roasting coffee in nearby Alexandria for over a century. It may not be as smooth as Ceremony Coffee, but it still makes for a decent cup.

  • Situated on the ground floor of an office building, Swing's manages to avoid a clinical atmosphere. Call Your Mother

Approaching this joyful (and much talked-about) corner bagel shop/deli on Georgia Avenue, I had no expectations for their coffee, although I planned to give it a try. As I waited in line, which extended out the door but moved quickly, I noticed customers carrying cappuccinos in ceramic diner mugs. Curiosity piqued, I decided to order one to enjoy in the shop while waiting for my bacon, egg, and cheese bagel. This turned out to be my first taste of Lost Sock Roasters, a local roaster that has been generating a lot of buzz. For Call Your Mother, they create a custom blend called "Just Coffee," reminiscent of the classic diner and bodega brews. It truly lives up to its name - rich, clean, and completely devoid of bitterness or muskiness. But what made the experience even better was the skilled barista who worked with remarkable speed and precision, reminding me of my favorite coffee spots in the Northwest. This cappuccino ranked among the best I had during my visit. The service at Call Your Mother was consistently friendly and welcoming, and their bagel sandwiches were so good that they will linger in your memory every time you settle for a less remarkable breakfast. Needless to say, I will be returning.
