The end of the herb harvesting season is most certainly not imminent. Rosehips, hawthorn, and a later-ripening sea buckthorn variety can still be harvested. The time is also ripe for establishing a firm foundation. Roots of herbs like horseradish, dandelion, chicory, valerian, comfrey, and burdock are especially potent at this time of year. However, I would like to try chicory and comfrey root this year and am not optimistic that I will be able to gather enough of either.

Explain Chicory to me.

The Cichorium intybus, or common chicory, is a member of the dandelion family that, depending on its environment and the quality of its soil, can reach heights of more than a meter. In full bloom, it resembles neither cornflowers nor the cloudless summer sky, but rather the color blue itself.

Find out what the plant looks like and how it grows before you try to forage it.

The chicory you're about to forage should be avoided if at all possible because it grows so frequently by roadways and is easily tainted by oil and dirt. It's important to collect chicory from non-polluted areas because it's frequently treated as a weed and sprayed with chemicals.

To make chicory root coffee, we need to get the root, which necessitates the use of tools like a shovel, garden scissors, and sharp knife. The flowers and leaves can be used to make teas or extracts instead.

The Origins of Chicory Coffee

Chicory has been around since ancient Egypt. Coffee was scarce during the Napoleonic Wars and World Wars I and II, but that's when its popularity soared. To replace coffee, people started drinking roasted chicory. Because of this, chicory "coffee" will forever be misunderstood as a poor substitute for real coffee. Regular consumption of this beverage not only tastes great but also has numerous health benefits.

The Advantages of Drinking Coffee Made from Chicory Root

  • Chicory coffee, which contains no caffeine, is a great option for those trying to cut back on their coffee consumption. Because it reduces blood sugar and has anti-inflammatory properties, caffeinated coffee is a superior supplement.
  • Inulin, a prebiotic fiber found in it, has been shown to promote digestive health and is associated with a lowered body mass index (1).
  • according to the results of this study, inulin aids in the metabolism of carbohydrates and, by extension, aids in the regulation of blood sugar (2).
  • Chicory root's anti-inflammatory properties may stem from the fact that it acts as an antioxidant and blocks the production of certain cytokines(3).

Instructions for preparing chicory brew

  1. Using baking paper or not, spread small pieces of chicory root on a baking tray and roast them at 360 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius) until they become golden brown and fragrant with coffee. I spent about an hour on it.

After the chicory root has been roasted, you should put the roasted pieces into a grinder and grind them until they form a powder. A powerful grinder is required. Not having a grinder, I resorted to using my blender. At least 10 minutes, with multiple breaks in between, was required to grind it into a powder. A pleasant Mocca scent was released into the powder when the blender was turned up to high.

Whether using a coffee maker, a French press, or simply pouring boiling water over coffee grounds and letting it steep for a few minutes, step four will yield a cup of coffee. Next, pour the coffee through a tea strainer to get rid of the used grounds and you're done:)
