Coffee cake is one of my all-time favorite dishes to prepare for a brunch party. Our next dish only takes a few minutes to prepare, and its buttery, cinnamony flavor is sure to win over any eater.
When I was a teenager, my mother made it for me before I went to summer camp, and I remember thinking, "I need to have this recipe in my life." It has a lot of flavor.
This is the best coffee cake recipe I've tried, and I've tried a lot.
It's basic, but it's become a tradition at many Christmas and Thanksgiving breakfast tables. You'll love the cinnamon and sugar flavor in this simple coffee cake.
Where does the name "coffee cake" come from?
There are countless regional variations on this type of cake that have been popular for centuries.
Most sources trace their origin in the United States to Germany, where they gained their delicious streusel topping. Everything was served with a hot cup of coffee, and that was the one constant among the various recipes. That's why it's called Coffee Cake.
Coffee Cake and Crumb Cake are two variants on the same theme, both of which are commonly enjoyed as morning or afternoon snacks with a hot or cold cup of java. Both cakes' bases are the same; the cinnamon sugar streusel is what sets them apart. A light streusel topping distinguishes coffee cake. Crumb cake's topping of buttery crumbs is much more substantial and coarse.
Recipe for Coffee Cake
We promised that this coffee cake recipe would be easy, and it is. We prepare it and pop it in the oven in about 10 minutes. In about 30 minutes, you'll have the best coffee cake you've ever tasted. 😉
MOIST CONSTITUENTS Mix oil, large eggs, vanilla, and milk in a large bowl.
INGREDIENTS THAT ARE ALREADY DRY Mix sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
Add the flour and baking powder to the eggs. Put half the batter in a 9x13-inch pan that has been greased lightly.
HEADING THE CRUMB Blend brown sugar and cinnamon together in a medium bowl to make streusel.
Top the batter with half the streusel. Spread the remaining batter and streusel on top.
Brush on some melted butter (you can use as little as a quarter cup or as much as a third cup).
COOK & EAT To bake, set oven temperature to 350 degrees and leave the oven door uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes.
Techniques for cooking
Heavy dough: Don't freak out if your batter ends up thicker than you anticipated. Density can be improved by combining the dry and wet ingredients using a spoon or spatula. If you're really nervous about it, you can thin it out by adding an extra egg or a little bit of milk.
The cake was baked in a muffin tin. What this means is that you should combine the liquids in one bowl and the dry ingredients in another, using a whisk for the latter.
So that the baking soda and salt are evenly distributed throughout the flour and you don't overmix the batter, it's important to do this step before adding the dry ingredients to the wet ones.
- You can make a tasty variation by including fruit. Toss in some blueberries, peaches, or apples for variety. Depending on the amount of liquid in the fruit, additional baking time may be required.
- Alternatives to vegetable oil include applesauce and coconut oil.
- Sprinkle some sliced almonds, chopped pecans, or chopped walnuts on top of the cake for a satisfying crunch.
- Make a glaze by combining 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar and 1 tablespoon milk, and drizzle it on top. Pour over the cake after it has cooled.
- Using parchment paper to line the pan will make it easier to remove the cake from the pan.

- Keep at room temperature, airtight, for up to 2 days.
- COVER and refrigerate for up to a week.
- FREEZE Seal tightly in plastic wrap, then place in an airtight container in the freezer for up to three months.
