Beaver The beaver is the world’s second largest rodent, next to the South American capybara. The term ‘beaver fever’ was unfairly coined by the American press in the 1970s, following findings that the parasite giardia lamblia, which causes giardiasis, is carried by beavers. But further research showed that plenty of other mammals, birds, and humans carried this parasite, which is a serious source of water contamination in the backcountry. All pathogens aside, a delicious 3-ounce slice of roast beaver will give you the following nutrition: Calories: 180 Protein: 30 grams Fat: 6 grams Cholesterol: 99 milligrams

47% of your daily allowance of Iron, 16% of your Riboflavin, 20% of B6, and 3% of your Thiamin.

Snapping Turtle Because their shell and belly plate (plastron) are so well connected, snapping turtles are very hard to clean. You’ll need a hatchet to help you open up this extra-lean, armored animal. Three ounces of snapping turtle meat contains: Calories: 75 Protein: 18 grams Fat: 0 grams Cholesterol: 42 milligrams

Moose The moose is the largest member of the deer family, with bulls easily reaching 1,000 pounds. The largest confirmed bull was shot near the Yukon River in September 1897. He weighed 1,800 pounds and measured 7½ feet tall at the shoulder. A 3-ounce piece of moose steak will give you the following nutrients: Calories: 114 Protein: 25 grams Fat: 1 gram Cholesterol: 66 milligrams

20% of your daily allowance of Iron, 17% of your Riboflavin, 22% of your Niacin, and 89% of B12.

Groundhog The groundhog, also known as a woodchuck or whistle pig is a rodent belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots. This is my least favorite game meat, but I’ll eat it if I have to. A 3-ounce roasted groundhog leg will give you these nutrients: Calories: 132 Protein: 15 grams Fat: 7 grams Cholesterol: 45 milligrams

3% of your daily allowance of Iron, 10% of your Riboflavin, and 27% of your Thiamin. Photo: marumari

09-05-2011
Common Name: Caribou (Reindeer)
Scientific Name: Rangifer tarandus
Average Life Span In The Wild: 15 years
Size: 4 to 5 feet at the shoulder
Weight: 240 to 700 pounds
Size relative to a 6-ft man:

Large hoofed animals belonging to the deer family, caribou and reindeer are actually the same species—Rangifer tarandus. There are differences between caribou and reindeer though. Caribou are native to North America, whereas reindeer are native to northern Europe and Asia. Alaska does have some reindeer, however, imported from Siberia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Some people use the term "reindeer" to refer to domesticated work animals, such as those pulling Santa's sleigh, but there are both wild and domestic herds of reindeer. Caribou, on the other hand, are wild-living and long-migrating. Indigenous groups, including the Sami in northern Scandinavia and the Nenet in Russia's Arctic, herd reindeer and use them for their meat. That's also likely why reindeer evolved to be stockier than caribou.

Migration

Caribou make one of the world's great large-animal migrations. As summer approaches, they head north along well-trod annual routes. Some herds may travel more than 600 miles to get to their summer grazing grounds. They'll spend the summer months feeding on the abundant grasses and plants of the tundra. An adult caribou can eat 12 pounds of food each day. This is also when they give birth.

When the first snows fall each year, the caribou turn back south. Herds of female caribou, called cows, leave several weeks before the males, which follow with yearling calves from the previous birthing season. The herds spend the winter in more sheltered climes and survive by feeding on lichens.

Caribou are taller and lankier than reindeer, likely because they evolved to make these long migrations.

Hooves and antlers

Caribou, as part of the deer family, have large hooves that are useful tools for life in the harsh northlands. They are big enough to support the animal's bulk on snow and to paddle it efficiently through the water. The hoof's underside is hollowed out like a scoop and used for digging through the snow in search of food. Its sharp edges give the animal good purchase on rocks or ice.

Caribou are the only deer in which male and females both have antlers—though only some females have them. Cows have one calf each year, which can stand after only a few minutes and move on with its mother by the next day.

Conservation

Caribou are classified as vulnerable to extinction, one step above endangered. Because they're migratory, changes in the landscape, such as the appearance of new fences or other human development on their migration routes, can be especially disruptive. Climate change is also a threat. As the Arctic warms, they become more susceptible to diseases and parasites, which could quickly spread through a herd.

Caribou Coffee Company is an American coffee company and coffeehouse chain. Caribou Coffee was founded in Edina, Minnesota, in 1992. As of May 2015, the company operates 603[3] locations worldwide.

Background

The original location, 44th and France or Store 101, is located in Edina, Minnesota.[4]

Caribou Coffee founder, John Puckett, was working as a management consultant for Boston-based firm Bain & Company, helping develop ideas and strategies for other companies, when he decided he wanted to become an entrepreneur. After a trip to Denali National Park in Alaska, he and his wife, Kim, decided to raise money and start a coffee company. His wife stayed with a job at General Motors while John moved to Minnesota to find the first site and put together financing.[5][6][7]

The initial concept for Caribou was a five-day-a-week schedule aimed at downtown office workers, mimicking what worked in Boston. Puckett signed a lease for the first location to be in the large Pillsbury Center office building. However, soon afterward the building's landlord decided not to sign the lease, because another of the building's retail tenants had exclusive rights to selling coffee in the building and had threatened to sue them. As a result, the financing for the store fell through because it was dependent on that specific site. Puckett opted to start looking for an available location in the suburbs, and the first Caribou Coffee shop was started in Edina, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis, in December 1992.[5]

In 2003, Michael J. Coles was named CEO of Caribou Coffee.[8]

On September 29, 2005, Caribou launched its IPO listed on NASDAQ under CBOU. CEO Michael J. Coles recalls: "Two years after I took over, we expanded to 337 stores in fourteen states and the District of Columbia. In less than three years, Caribou went from a company with negative sales growth to a public company listed on NASDAQ."[9]

In 2006, Arcapita (formerly known as First Islamic Investment Bank) was Caribou Coffee's majority shareholder.[10] In 2002, Yusuf al-Qaradawi's involvement[11] with the bank led to a protest of Caribou Coffee.[12][13] That same year al-Qaradawi stepped down as chairman of the bank's Sharia Board.[14]

As of 2009, Caribou employed more than 6,000 people.

In December 2012, the company was taken private in a 0 million deal by German equity company JAB Holding Company.[15][16] Following the merger, it was stated that Caribou coffee would continue to be operated as an independent company with its own brand, management team and growth strategy, and that Caribou would continue to be based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.[17]

In May 2013, Caribou Coffee announced plans to close 80 stores in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Illinois and Eastern Wisconsin, with 88 others in those locations to be converted to Peet's Coffee & Tea during 2013–2014. Caribou locations would remain open in California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and ten international markets.[18][19]

On August 5, 2021, Caribou announced that it had merged with Panera Bread and Einstein Bros. Bagels to form Panera Brands.[20] After four years in private hands, on Nov. 8, 2021, Panera Brands filed paperwork for an initial public offering of stock.[21]

Data breach

On December 20, 2018, the company notified its customers of a potential data breach that they discovered in late November of that same year. The breach also affected other companies owned by JAB Holding Company, namely Bruegger's and Einstein Bros. Bagels,[22] and included the release of credit card numbers and CVV codes.[23]

08-07-2020 · With all said and done, the total count for a normal-sized bubble tea is around 280 – 350 calories. Keep in mind some stores add more sugars to the flavors and some even add more boba pearls. So the calories can definitely creep upwards to 400 – 500 calories per drink.

How many calories are in boba? Is there a lot of calories in bubble tea? Will bubble tea make me gain weight? Is boba even healthy? How healthy is boba?

Be honest.

Have you asked yourself this at least once? Or maybe your best friend has brought up this question within the friend circle at least once.

Either way, there always seems to be someone that brings up the question of how much calories are there in boba. Especially new bubble tea or boba drinkers. We’ve been guilty of it too.

The short answer, there is not as many calories in bubble tea or boba as you’d think.

But you’re not here the short answer are you now. Let’s break it down and see why there really isn’t that many calories in a drink called bubble tea. Calories in boba, read below!

What are the Ingredients that Make Up Bubble Tea?

First, we have to answer the question of what exactly is in your typical milk teas. Generally, bubble tea consists of 4 parts: the tea, the milk, the sweetener, and the tapioca pearls.

The tea

Any great milk tea or bubble tea will have some sort of tea. Whether it’s made from your store-bought tea bags like Lipton black tea or the more fancy and organic way, actual tea leaves.

Despite how the tea is steeped, the more important matter is that a tea base makes the whole bubble tea experience that much more delicious. Tea plays a very important role when making a bubble tea, if not the most important.

In our opinion, the bitterness and depth of flavors from tea, mixed with a sweetener and milk are what make the bubble tea experience come full circle. The tea helps to balance out the silky smooth milk and the sweetener nicely. The tea is the base, just like how coffee is the base in a great latte.

The milk

To add to the experience, milk is equally as important as the tea is.

The milk used in bubble teas serves to give you that silky and smooth texture when sipping on a delicious milk tea. Without a good creamer, a flavor like Thai tea wouldn’t be as great.

Find a boba shop that truly prides itself in making delicious bubble teas with real milk and tea, you’ll be in for a treat. Sometimes it’s hard to come by these shops though. In general, the majority of the bubble tea shops you see take the shortcut.

They usually make bubble tea with powder mix similar to this. Take honeydew tea for example. If you don’t see real honeydew being chopped up in the blender, it’s safe to say that they use an alternative like powder.

Shops use powder because it’s more cost-effective and quicker to make when ordered. In our humble boba opinion, making bubble tea without powder is the best for quality. Price may be more expensive but the freshness in the ingredients is hard to beat.

The sweetener

In addition to tea and milk, the two most important ingredients in a great bubble tea, you have the sweetener.

Usually, boba shops will use syrups of several different flavors in order to give you the sweet taste you desire. Especially in fruity bubble teas like strawberry bubble tea or mango bubble tea.

However, some shops will opt for condensed milk instead or simple syrup. With condensed milk, you’re getting two of the best worlds, creamy texture and sweetness added to your already great bubble tea.

Here’s a tip.

When ordering bubble teas at your local boba shop, be sure to ask for 50 – 75% of sugar if you’re not that big on sugary drinks. Boba tends to be on the sweeter side than bitter. If you like tasting the slight bitterness of authentic tea, be sure to opt for a lower percentage of sweetness in your bubble tea.

The tapioca

Now the chewy bite of tapioca pearls.

Sometimes it is a hit or miss for a great texture in boba pearls. If you order your bubble tea with pearls (sometimes people order without) this can make or break your entire experience.

A good texture for boba is to have a chew that takes 8-15 bites to finish. Anything more or less is simply not that great.

If you chew less than 8 times, your boba may actually be more starchy and break up too fast. Giving you a very bad texture almost like chewing bits of leftover rice. If you know, you know.

If you chew anymore than 15 times, your boba is too chewy almost like gum.

With each bite of boba pearls, it should break down naturally in 8-15 bites.

What are the Calories in Bubble Tea?

Now that we’ve established the key ingredients that make up a great boba drink, let’s dive into the calories of each part.

We promise it’s not that bad.

How many calories are because of the tea in bubble tea?

In the majority of teas, whether it is black tea, green tea, or some other herbal tea, there are hardly any calories. If anything, a typical homemade brew of tea is less than 5 calories at most.

It doesn’t matter if you use a tea bag or actual tea leaves, the boiled water that is later steeped into tea has little to no calories at all. This is part of the reason why bubble tea doesn’t have many calories when you think about it. The base (the biggest part in terms of ingredients in boba) doesn’t have many calories at all.

It’s the other ingredients or parts of the bubble tea that contain the calories but not as much as you’d think.

What are the calories of milk in bubble tea?

Since a normal 8oz cup of bubble tea typically has a small portion of milk, the calories won’t add up too fast.

In any cup of bubble tea, you’re looking to have about 50 – 80 calories from dairy or milk. Now depending on what milk is used will determine whether your boba calories fall into the higher range or lower range. Some kinds of milk commonly used are regular milk, non-dairy milk, almond milk, or soy milk.

Is there a lot of calories in sweeteners?

Here’s where it gets a bit tricky.

Let’s start with regular simply syrups or flavored syrups that boba shops tend to use often. Like any syrup, it’s mostly made of sugar and water boiled together. When counting the calories in 1 oz of simple syrup, you’re looking at about 30 – 50 calories.

Whereas condensed milk, you can expect to see around 100 – 130 calories per 1 oz of condensed milk. Being that it is a sweetened concentration of milk, the small amount packs a big punch when it comes to calories.

But, with all the above so far your simple bubble tea is looking to be around 200 calories, which isn’t too bad at all. (Like any good thing, balance is key!)

How many calories are in tapioca pearls?

Finally, in order to sum up the total amount of calories any typical bubble tea can have, we have to add in the tapioca pearls. Assuming you’ve ordered this with your bubble tea of course.

Tapioca pearls are made of cassava starch, it’s full of carbohydrates. In terms of calories, you’re looking around 100 – 135 calories worth of tapioca pearls in any normal-sized bubble tea.

Typically bubble tea shops will scoop ¼ a cup of tapioca pearls that translates to the above calorie count.

With all said and done, the total count for a normal-sized bubble tea is around 280 – 350 calories. Keep in mind some stores add more sugars to the flavors and some even add more boba pearls. So the calories can definitely creep upwards to 400 – 500 calories per drink.

Feel free to go for the higher calorie count once in a while. At least your taste buds won’t regret it!
Now that you’ve read the above details in what goes into a normal bubble tea drink, do you think it was all that bad after all? We don’t think it is. As long as there is moderation and you’re not drinking bubble tea 3 times a day, you shouldn’t have any worries.

Life is about balance!
